Abuja — Nigerian authorities have announced an extraordinary security breakthrough by confirming the killing of a notorious bandit kingpin and over one hundred of his followers in an extensive military operation conducted in Nigeria’s northwest region.

According to military sources, the coordinated air and ground assault targeted a heavily fortified camp used by a violent gang which has been responsible for attacks, kidnappings, and extortion in Zamfara and neighboring states.

“The operation was a success, as the terrorist leader and over 100 of his fighters were neutralized,” stated Major General Edward Buba of Nigerian Defence Headquarters. This represents a significant setback against an organization which had terrorized communities in the region for many years.

Though his identity has yet to be publicly revealed, officials described him as one of Nigeria’s most wanted criminals who is responsible for high-profile kidnappings of schoolchildren and ambushes on security forces.

Residents in the affected area reported hearing gunfire and airstrikes Friday night, followed by an increased military presence on Saturday morning.

Nigeria’s government, under pressure to address rising insecurity, has intensified military efforts against armed gangs known locally as “bandits.” These gangs operate primarily in remote forested regions and pose an increasing threat to stability in the northwest region.

Human rights groups have repeatedly called on all military operations to adhere to international humanitarian law, emphasizing the need to safeguard civilians caught up in crossfire.

Government officials claim the successful raid is part of an overall campaign to restore peace and security across troubled regions, vowing to remain on guard against criminal elements.
