As violence surges through western Sudan, thousands of civilians sheltering in Darfur refugee camps face constant fear for their lives as airstrikes and ground assaults from warring factions continue to devastate the area.
Residents of Khor Omer refugee camp, home to families displaced by months of violent conflict, are living under increasingly dire conditions as attacks intensify. Without safe places left to hide in makeshift shelters, families huddle together under makeshift structures as the Sudanese military and rebel groups fight each other brutally for supremacy in Sudan.
Fatima Abdu, a mother of three living in a camp for almost two years and witnessing death around them first-hand, told BBC Arabic: “Death is everywhere”. We hear bombs go off and planes fly overhead – we don’t know if we will wake up tomorrow as people are dying all around us.
Since April 2023, this conflict has resulted in over two million displacements and caused tens of thousands of casualties – creating a humanitarian catastrophe in an already unstable region.
United Nations officials report that food and medical supplies are running low while airstrikes continue to damage infrastructure at a camp that offers residents little access to clean water and basic healthcare services.
“We cannot imagine living like this for much longer,” stated Mohammed Ali, a local aid worker. The people living in the camp are afraid but there’s no escape; attacks keep coming and nobody seems concerned.”
Due to the danger caused by ongoing conflict, international organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Doctors Without Borders have been unable to offer reliable assistance. Although United Nations Security Council calls for a ceasefire, diplomatic efforts have failed in creating peace in the region.
As Sudanese President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and rebel commanders engage in tenuous negotiations, Darfurians continue to endure an agonizing conflict that shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
